This is my best friend, Hallie. We have been friends for about ten years. She is amazing, intelligent, strong, compassionate, a great wife, friend, and mother. I look up to and respect her on an infinite amount of levels.
Hallie and my views differ on a lot of things. Our life experiences are also very different. I am pretty liberal, while she tends to be more conservative. She has two awesome girls and delivered them naturally, I have two incredible boys and had an elective C-section after being told I would have complications. We both have the option to stay home with our children, Hallie chooses to work and I am currently a stay-at-home mom. Hallie was able to breast feed her children for a length of time; I ended up giving it up after 8 weeks due to complications and inferior milk. She feels Saturday's march did not represent her; I feel the March did represent me.
The point is, none of these facts about either of us makes us less of a mother/person/human than the other. You are entitled to have an opinion, you are NOT entitled to attack and demean others if they do not agree with you. I love Hallie more BECAUSE of her views, not in spite of them. We are able to respect each other, look at each other as family, help each other raise our tiny humans to some day be amazing, capable, and respectful adults together. Also, it just goes to show there is no one mold for a liberal or conservative, there is no hard line for Democrat or Republican. There IS one for respectful and open-minded. Be able to have conversations; be able to embrace your differences. It strengthens your relationships. I learn a lot from Hallie. She has a way of looking at things that I may have not seen without her. At the end of the day, we may see the world differently, but that doesn't define how much we care about each other or how we treat one another. THAT is what makes women powerful. Be someone who strives to lift all people up, not just the ones who see things as you do.
