Our Mt. Purgatory circuit hike introduced us to a new entry point, which brought us through Mt. Awa and Mt. Pinagpagan before reaching the traditional circuit starting in Mt. Pack. Being an entry point that has only been used once, the trail begins in an open grass area passing by the homes of farmers and pasture zones. The ascent is consistently gradual up to the point when you reach the mossy forest, to which an abrupt change in difficulty ensues, forcing you to take on an even steeper and seemingly endless trail while picking off handfuls of limatik at every rest stop. The trail effectively adds 5-6 hours to the already lengthy circuit, proving to be a real test of physical and mental endurance, and great training for even lengthier hikes.
